We Are Gatik: Episode Four

Brenda Mejia
Head of Operations

Gatik was founded with the goal of enhancing logistics safety and reliability through AI-driven autonomous technology. From day one as the first employee, I was thrust into a unique setting: a simple yet spirited office space with just four desks, reserved for the founders and myself. In the backdrop, our early test vehicles – a Ford platform and an all-electric GEM utility platform – parked alongside our solitary branded banner, served as a constant reminder of the pioneering path we were charting.

As the first employee at a deep-tech startup like Gatik, I understood the immense stakes and challenges ahead. Our journey to achieving autonomous transportation extends beyond deploying cutting-edge technology – it centers on ensuring each mile is traversed with utmost precision and safety. During my tenure, I’ve worn multiple hats, from leading specialized training programs, building, managing, and motivating high performing global teams, driving large cross-functional initiatives, enforcing compliance and a safety-first culture in our day-to-day operations. My job has always been about doing whatever it takes to push the boundaries of what’s possible, and at Gatik today, that ethos is more critical than ever.

My career journey has been anything but linear – from Art History to Biochemistry and roles in education and government – has uniquely shaped my approach to leadership and innovation. Studying Art History, I honed my ability to discern patterns and understand contextual nuances, skills invaluable in logistics. My scientific training in Biochemistry taught me the significance of precision and methodical problem-solving, ensuring we address challenges with meticulous attention to detail. My time at FEMA introduced me to the critical importance of logistics and emergency management, preparing me for high-stakes situations requiring rapid response and cohesive teamwork. These diverse experiences have equipped me with the ability to clearly communicate complex ideas, an essential skill when spearheading the introduction of revolutionary technologies like AI-driven autonomy at Gatik.

These diverse experiences gave me the confidence to tackle the unknown. So, when the opportunity to join Gatik came along, I saw it as the perfect culmination of everything I’d done before. The challenge of helping to build a company from the ground up, particularly in a field as revolutionary as autonomous transportation, is thrilling.

In the early days of Gatik, my role was far from defined – because in reality, it encompassed just about everything. When you’re the first employee at a startup, you quickly learn that titles mean little, and what matters most is getting the job done, regardless of the task. From human resources and finance to marketing and recruiting – I was deeply involved in every operational facet. My involvement was not born from expertise in all these areas but from a pressing need, and as a founding team member, addressing these needs was my primary responsibility.

I didn’t shy away from areas that were unfamiliar but instead embraced challenges head-on, whether setting up our initial payroll system, devising marketing strategies from scratch, or mastering the nuances of early-stage recruiting. Each task was approached with a mindset that failure was merely a detour, not a roadblock, teaching me to quickly adapt and learn from each experience.

One of the most intense early challenges was onboarding our first major customer, Walmart – a task that proved to be a whirlwind of activity. With limited time, the stakes were high to finalize contracts, streamline logistics, and ensure our technology delivered on its promises. The process involved many sleepless nights, driven by the urgency to secure these pivotal partnerships. Every detail was critical, and the pressure immense, but the exhilaration of seeing our customer successfully implement our solutions was profoundly rewarding and a testament to our hard work.

Building and maintaining trust is a cornerstone of effective leadership in self-driving operations. This extends beyond internal team dynamics to include forging strong relationships with external partners and regulators. Regularly, I lead efforts to demonstrate the safety and reliability of our technology through workshops and live demonstrations. These sessions showcase our advanced safety features, supported by data-driven simulations and real-world performance metrics.

Such activities are crucial for alleviating any concerns and proving our technology’s readiness for integration into existing logistics systems. A key indicator of the trust we’ve established with our partners is their willingness to allow us to carry their logos on our autonomous vehicles. This endorsement is not only a mark of credibility but also a vital element in the broader acceptance and deployment of autonomous driving technology in commercial operations.

Today, I oversee Gatik’s entire operations landscape, consisting of a complex web of teams, both inside and outside the organization. Every day, I collaborate closely with engineers, fleet managers, data scientists, and our incredible partners, ensuring that our approach to autonomy is seamless and effective. By owning every aspect of the middle mile – from the technology that powers our AI-driven trucks to the logistics that keep them running smoothly – we’re able to deliver unmatched reliability and precision to our customers. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive; our customers appreciate not only the efficiency we bring but also the safety and dependability that define our service.

Looking back on my Gatik journey, we started with a bold vision and modest beginnings, and today we’re transforming an entire industry. As I look to the future, I know Gatik will continue to push the boundaries of autonomous transportation, setting new standards for logistics and supply chain efficiency.

So, are you ready to be a part of the journey? Here’s your opportunity.
