Gatik and Isuzu Team Up to Mass-Produce SAE Level 4 (L4) Production-Ready Autonomous Trucks Powered by NVIDIA

The autonomous trucking industry is at an inflection point. Over the past several years, the sector has experienced a number of seismic changes: we’ve seen companies merge, pivot and fail – none of which is surprising for an industry in which the major players are not only working to solve the challenge of autonomous trucking from a technology perspective, but also trying to establish a commercial path to success.

The industry has come a very long way since the early years of small-scale deployments, and there is no question that 2025 will play a significant role in defining the future of autonomous trucking. At Gatik, we’ve validated the technology and the business case for our middle-mile solution with multiple Fortune 500 customers across a wide range of markets, geographies and operating conditions. We are the first autonomous trucking company to conduct revenue-generating driverless deliveries in both the United States and Canada, and have delivered over 2,000,000 commercial orders since 2019.

We’ve now turned our attention to commercialization at scale, network densification and mass production of our solution. To lead this next generation of AI-Driven Autonomy, and truly deploy Freight-Only (driverless) operations at scale, we need the right partners.

This week we announced that we’re teaming up with NVIDIA to develop and deploy the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX platform, featuring the next-generation DRIVE Thor system-on-a-chip, across our fleet of medium-duty Freight-Only vehicles. This partnership marks a significant milestone in our mission to commercialize a safe, efficient autonomous transportation network for the middle-mile, enhancing Gatik’s commercial-grade production capabilities and accelerating the deployment of Level 4 (L4) autonomous trucks for customers including Walmart, Kroger, Tyson Foods and Loblaw. We’re redefining the logistics landscape, driving unprecedented supply chain efficiencies, and creating lasting economic and societal benefits for future generations.

AI-Driven Autonomy

Advancements in AI have accelerated the development of safety-first autonomous technology, poised to transform industries that rely on trucking, including retail, grocery, eCommerce and more. With NVIDIA’s accelerated computing and AI technologies, AI-driven autonomy will become increasingly accessible to communities worldwide.

NVIDIA DRIVE AGX featuring the DRIVE Thor SoC, will serve as the AI brain for these next-generation self-driving trucks. Now shipping to the global transportation market, the automotive-grade DRIVE AGX Thor, which runs on the safety-certified DriveOS operating system, is built on the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture. DRIVE AGX Thor packs more than 1,000 trillion operations per second of high-performance compute – enabling the development and deployment of safe, autonomous trucks and other vehicles at scale.

This revolutionary architecture will provide critical support to the onboard AI-processing necessary for deploying Gatik’s Freight-Only trucks safely – and producing them at scale.

Freight-Only at Scale

Isuzu's South Carolina Production Facility

Gatik’s collaboration with NVIDIA builds on our existing long-term partnership with Isuzu North America Corporation. Isuzu and Gatik have been working together since 2021 to accelerate the development of autonomous trucking across the continent. In 2024, Gatik and Isuzu committed to collaborating on the design, development, and production of an SAE L4 autonomous truck with robust and safety-critical redundant systems (including braking, steering and sensors, as well as software) with complete validation required for Freight-Only operations. Our fleet of Isuzu medium-duty vehicles is equipped with Gatik’s industry-leading autonomous technology, and NVIDIA DRIVE AGX, to safely scale Freight-Only operations for Gatik’s customer-base.

Recently, Isuzu announced the establishment of a new production facility in South Carolina. This facility, coming online in 2027, is anticipated to have an annual production capacity of approximately 50,000 vehicles by 2030, ushering in the next generation of autonomous, connected and carbon-neutral solutions. It will introduce a variable-model, variable-volume production system that can efficiently respond to changes in customer demand for electric or internal combustion-powered commercial vehicles. Our partnership with Isuzu marks the first time that an OEM and autonomy partner have committed to work together to mass produce L4 capable trucks – a crucial step beyond the R&D phases of other companies in the sector, and one which will ensure Gatik is able to meet our customers’ needs quickly, safely and at scale.

Our partnerships with NVIDIA and Isuzu are defined by an uncompromising commitment to the highest standards of safety and performance. Isuzu has been the global leader in medium-duty truck production for over a century, and NVIDIA has redefined the AI chip industry, becoming synonymous with high-performance computing for the autonomous vehicle sector. Our partnerships with both NVIDIA and Isuzu are founded on the principles of safe, reliable, high-volume manufacturing – together, we’re building an autonomous solution that will revolutionize the way people receive essential goods and supplies and their best-loved brands.

The Year of Autonomous Trucking

This year, we’re delivering on our commitment to the production of safe, high-performance Freight-Only trucks at scale. Our Fortune 500 customer-base has turned to autonomy to manage the increasingly acute demands of their consumers who want higher frequency deliveries, and goods available closer to home at lower cost. To meet these demands, autonomy isn’t just helpful, it’s essential. The middle-mile is a $250B market in North America alone and is ripe for disruption. By focusing exclusively on this segment of the logistics sector, we’re ideally positioned to support our customers expand their autonomous transportation networks safely, reliably and efficiently. Don’t take your eyes off Gatik in 2025 – there’s a lot more to come.
